Of Rebels and Ruin

A Shadow and Mist Series

Book One

Tengoku is an Elven Empire in turmoil.  It has been twenty-three years since the great civil war that saw the rise of Emperor Lao’shun and his Dra’karan faction over the Ki’saari faction who’d once been in power. After the loss of their lands, the Ki’saari were enslaved by the Dra’karan ruler, only given the right to second-class citizenship if they renounced their birth faction and claimed loyalty to the throne of Lao’shun. The Killari, the name for Ki’saari who declared loyalty to the Dra’kar, had, for many years, helped keep the balance in the Empire, especially when rebellion threaten to crush it. Yet, all things come to an end and Tengoku has begun to crumble from within. Especially now that many Killari have disappeared, rumored to have joined the rebels of the far eastern elven kingdom. Throughout Tengoku their growing power and strength can be seen. Temples are being destroyed and villages burnt to the ground. She-elves and elflings murdered in cold blood. Provinces are under attack.  Whispers of rebellion have become shouts, yet the Emperor hides in the Jade Palace and does nothing while his people fight for survival.

The flame of rebellion is spreading across the elven lands like a wildfire.  A war is brewing and in the midst of the chaos is a loyal subject, bound by duty and honor, who could be the difference between survival and complete annihilation of all elven kind.

Killari Captain, Talshae Iwa, a servent of Lord Ikazawa Maru, is on the trail of the rebels who have made their way south to Sha’chaong Province, the provincial lands of her master. After having destroyed targets all across Sha’chaong, the rebels are on the move. Talshae must do what she can to find evidence that the attacks are being funded by wealthy Dra’karan patrons. Evidence that will convince the Emperor to come out of hiding and defend the elven citizens of Tengoku. When she travels to Do’gha to retrieve a rebel collaborator with crucial information,  things don’t go as planned and she is forced to go on the run. Every step closer to her master she makes it, the closer she gets to a truth that will threaten to destroy the very fabric of her reality.

Meanwhile, in Sha’chaong City, Commander Kaji Tei of Lord Yu Lee’s personal guard has arrived in Lord Ikazawa’s Provincial capital with his master and other leaders. Lord Yu and the other leaders are headed north to the Jade Palace to call an emergency war council meeting, with or without the Emperor’s approval. While Kaji’s master must convince the Emperor’s most loyal subject, Ikazawa, to go along with his plans, Commander Tei is tasked with uncovering more about the rebel threats, including collaborating reports they have received from their mole working in Ikazawa’s service. But, Kaji has plans of his own. Ones that don’t necessarily line up with his master’s wishes. Plans that don’t include fighting a war or leading a group of secret warriors known as the Court of the Black Crane. Plans that could only be derailed by a Killari elf to whom he had given his heart.

Many in Tengoku have reason to suspect each other, but Ikazawa and Yu Lee, much-hated rivals, have the most reason for distrust. Vying for, not just the Emperor’s favor, but lands, power, and wealth, these two lords have everything to lose, but much more to gain, if war is declared. So when Talshae finally arrives in Sha’chaong City and brings news that could destroy everything both lords have worked hard to establish, nothing but chaos will ensue.

No elf is safe in Tengoku. Especially an elven slave that could bring down an Empire and two powerful lords with the secrets she has uncovered.

Duty. Honor. Sacrifice. Death. Nothing is for certain in the game of rebels and spies except that it is decided in the shadows.
